From JOIN version 2024.11 it is possible to use a new template editor that works without installing the JOIN client. The new template editor is a clientless Word add-in. This page describes how to configure the clientless JOIN Template Editor.
- JOIN users can download the Manifest for the Template Editor add-in using this link
- For AKS:
https://
[join website]/TemplateEditorManifest.ashx
- For an on-premise website:
https://
[join website]/decosweb/aspx/TemplateEditorManifest.ashx
Replace [join website] with your JOIN domain.
- If you browser blocks the download, please allow it to proceed. A file named TemplateEditorManifest.xml should be downloaded.
- In File Explorer, create a folder and copy the TemplateEditorManifest.xml file into it.
- Then, right-click on the folder containing the file, navigate to “Give access to”, and select Specific people.

- Once “Specific people” is clicked, the Network Access tab will open. Select the users you want to share the folder with, then click the “Share” button.

- Once “Share” is clicked, a window similar to the image below will appear. Keep this window open.

- Open Microsoft Word, go to File, and then click on Options.
- Once Options is open, select Trust Center, then click on Trust Center Settings.

- Another window will pop up. Go to Trusted Add-in Catalogs. Enter the URL as shown in the window of step 6 as Catalog URL, then click on Add Catalog. Once the Catalog is added, check the Show in Menu box, then click OK.

- Restart Microsoft Word, click on Add-ins in the main ribbon, then More Add-ins:

- Click Shared Folder. If you do not see the Template Editor, click on Refresh. Once the Template Editor add-in appears, select it and click on Add.

- The Template Editor should now appear in your ribbon.

- Before you can use the add-in, JOIN Admin configuration is required, see below.
- In JOIN Admin, go to System management > Configuration.
a. Check the option Enable clientless template editor. This setting is required.

b. To allow users having local password verification to use the template editor, the option Skip ADFS logged out page must be unchecked.

JOIN support often uses an ADMINISTRATOR user having local password verification, so it is recommended that this option is unchecked during the acceptance test period.
Save configuration after changing settings.
- Go to Connectivity > System Configuration and add a new System named Templateeditor. The system identifier must exactly match this:

Do not set a client secret. The template editor will not work when a client secret is configured. There also is no need to configure a password. The Word add-in will use a JOIN user account to authenticate the template editor user.
After JOIN Admin configuration, it should be possible to authenticate a JOIN user from the Word add-in. Open Word, click on Template Editor in the ribbon, then on the Authenticate with JOIN button.

If Admin configuration is correct, you should see a pop-up with a log in window. Log in as a user having permissions to log in to JOIN Admin. When log in is successful, the template editor side bar will be updated:
